Surfing the storm

Monster surfDuring the storm of Monday October 28, 2013, a team of Brazilian surfers came to Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal. They hoped to find some killer waves there, and boy did they.

In her attempt to rewrite the Guinness World Record Book, 26-year-old Maya Gabeira would have drowned if it weren’t for Carlos Burle. Carlos hadn’t ridden a single wave yet at the time, but was instrumental in saving his teammate. And that even wasn’t the biggest thrill of his day…

After Maya was taken to the hospital, the 45-year-old Brazilian went out and caught a wave that might just be the biggest ever surfed. Guinness World Records still needs to confirm, which they won’t do until the new issue in 2014, but the monster that came for him is thought to have been 30 meters (100 feet) high.
